VALLETTA, May 9 (Xinhua) — Bank of Valletta (BOV) has regained 10 million euros (12.3 million U.S. dollars) and is starting legal proceedings to recover 2.9 million euros of the 13 million euros which were stolen in February’s cyber attack, Television Malta (TVM) reported on Thursday.
“We were informed on Tuesday that foreign police caught the people who committed the money theft and we commissioned lawyers in foreign jurisdictions to trace the money and bring it back,” BOV’s chairman Deo Scerri told TVM.
“That is there is a good chance that all the money is retrieved, except for small amounts of less than one million euros which were spent and cannot be recovered,” he said.
After a cyber attack hit BOV on Feb. 13, hackers transferred 13 million euros out of the bank.
The attack forced the bank to suspend all its operations, including branches, point of sales systems as well as the companies internal email system.
The Maltese government is the largest shareholder in the bank.
